Start with a tailored velvet jacket in a color you like. Gather scraps, zippers, and buttons in shades that complement the jacket.

Embellishment

Jacket Front

Put the jacket on a dress form or hanger and begin pinning your scraps on the jacket. The plan is to cover over the lower right front of the jacket with some muted colors and a variety of textures. Start at the right front, just under the pocket flap, and pin fabric scraps, repositioning them until you have a pleasing design. Pin on the larger underlayer pieces and sew them down first. Next add some other colors and textures to your target zone. Once your fabric strips and scraps are sewn in place, add a piece of wool along the lower right edge of the jacket, from the second button on down, around the lower front edge, and onto the back of the jacket. I cut this piece from a wool blazer—it was just a curved seam from an old jacket. It provided an edge finish and added structure.

On the lower left front of the jacket pin down three zippers in varying colors and lengths. Topstitch them in place. Make sure one of them is long enough to wrap around to the lower back left of the jacket. Sew a small buckle from the bottom left pocket flap to the lower pocket. This one was from an old plaid kilt.
